Parkway Drive, Bury Your Dead, Suicide Silence - Metalcore Sunday
On an easy Sunday the Melkweg in Amsterdam was shaken awake by four heavy bands. I missed To Kill, but there was still more than enough metalcore to destroy your ears. Here we go!
Not so long ago, Suicide Silence was the opening act for Behemoth on their European tour and I was glad to see this band on a short term for the second time. The deathcore from this young American band is one of the most ferocious and best performed I’ve ever seen in the scene. The band again played extremely aggressive and the singer is able to make the nastiest high screams and good low grunts. The breakdowns of Suicide Silence are just massive and the songs are enough distinguishable from each other to keep it interesting. With this second show I’ve seen I cannot but conclude that Suicide Silence is band with high qualities.
How on earth could Bury Your Dead ever top this show of Suicide Silence? That was the number one question when they started. Apart from that, I was very curious whether they could perform the material from their just released fourth record live as well as on CD. On that record they manage to get a sound of their own by combining metalcore with mechanical Fear Factory riffs. Somewhat like Threat Signal, but without those god awful clean vocals. Unfortunately live it didn’t come very convincingly across, it just hadn’t that sharp edge as on record. The vocals, which sounded live way too monotone, also didn’t help of course. A missed chance.
Headliner Parkway Drive is getting more and more popular. Quite some shows on this European tour are sold out and also today in Amsterdam a lot of people showed up. Those people got to hear a strong and decent show as one would expect from a band like Parkway Drive. Apart from that, I wonder why kids are so crazy about this band, because they play just the standard metalcore as we know it for many years now, Killswitch Engage anyone? They really lack a sound of their own and in my humble opinion don’t add anything to the whole genre. Well there are simply just a lot of people still really into and eager for that stuff, and I’m sure those people had a wonderful night.
